Energy conservation and emission reduction Enhance the Value of Vessels
2024-08-15
With the promulgation of various environmental protection regulations by IMO MEPC, green and low-carbon ship repair has become an inevitable development trend in the shipping industry.Wing sail propulsion system and bulbous bows replacement have emerged as new forces in energy conservation, providing more favorable guarantees for achieving EEXI compliance and CII ratings, ultimately realizing the green,energy-saving, and valuable preservation for vessels.
As a pioneer of energy conservation, one PCC completed the relevant installation for the wing sail and replaced the bulbous bow at the IMCZY in May 2024. The great efforts of the project team finally ensured the vessel’s sailing plan.
Facing the tight timeline, the project execution encountered challenges, such as rainy weather in the early stage and high temperatures in the later stage, coupled with the increased workload in the yard. However, with the joint efforts of the workshop production line, the modification and repair work was completed.
Modification Project Brief
1. Wind Powered Unit/ WPU
The wing sail propulsion system is a new technology for reducing ship sailing resistance. By installing retractable wind sails on the open deck and precisely adjusting the sails angle according to the wind directions, it harnesses the power of nature during navigation, significantly improving ship sailing efficiency, reducing fuel consumption, and achieving the target of energy conservation and emission reduction.
In order to successfully complete the first wind sail system, the project team collaborated closely with the shipowner and class survey to conduct detailed inspections. With the point of the inclining test, working backward from each schedule, the project team identified and coordinated all steps, optimized construction procedures, and avoided cross-operations. Thorough production preparation is a good start for the project. Before the vessel arrived at the yard, the project team carefully studied the drawings, and completed the prefabrication of T-section supports of the wind sail bases and new deck structure block in advance. With meticulous planning and process prioritization, every step of the welding process for the steel structure and the assembly of the wind sail bases was executed precisely. Finally all works passed the inspections with the shipowner and maker’s high standards and strict requirements, with full satisfaction and praise. Even though one-fourth of the repair period was affected by rain, it didn’t deter our determination to maintain the schedule and ensure on-time delivery. The project team actively adjusted plans and ensured that milestones were completed on time.
2. Bulbous Bow Modification Project
The bulbous bow is specifically designed for this vessel to boast a smoother profile and effectively minimize resistance during navigation. It significantly reduces fuel consumption and optimizes sailing speed, and is an important step towards improving the ship's energy efficiency and environmental performance.
With the rich experience and precise planning, IMCZY is very confident of undertaking such projects. The innovative dock-bottom trolley glides smoothly along the tracks formed without complex positioning and measurements. With zero-tolerance closure, the IMCZY team can complete the work of cutting, lifting and pre-welding assembly in 23 hours, and we are continually making records and improving.
With all the dedication and efforts, we have left a profound impression on shipowners, and they have fully affirmed the team's professional service, skills and responsible attitude, reinforcing the trust to choose IMCZY for ship repair services. Customer Customer satisfaction is the greatest motivator for us.
After this project, IMCZY will be more confident to take the future energy-saving projects in a faster, higher quality and more effective way. IMCZY strives to continuously improve and provide intelligent and professional green ship repair services.
